In mid-September, I commenced my undergraduate studies in International Social and Public Policy with Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). After two years of hard work in the IB Diploma Programme, my arrival at my dream school felt like a well-earned reward – yet the reality of being surrounded by the elitest students from all around the world is a scenery I have never observed in any of the schools I have been to.
9月中旬、私はロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクス（LSE）にて、経済学を副専攻とする国際社会・公共政策学の学士課程を開始した。国際バカロレア（IB）ディプロマ・プログラムでの2年間の努力を経て、憧れの大学に入学できたことは、まさに努力が報われた瞬間だった。しかし、世界中から集まったエリート学生たちに囲まれる現実は、これまで通ったどの学校でも経験したことのない光景である。
Firstly, on the academic side of things, LSE has been an eye-opening experience. As a joint economics programme student, one of my modules is microeconomics, which takes place in a lecture hall of more than 800 students. During the IB, economics was one of my favourite subjects – hence it has been a challenging, yet exciting experience to study this subject on a degree level at a university like the LSE. Unlike at school, much of the work at university is independent, with much less contact hours. However, my university has incredible studying facilities, making it somewhat more enjoyable. Another perk of being a student in London is that you have access to other universities’ libraries – thus, you will never run out of new study spots to discover.
まず学業面では、LSEでの経験は目を見開かれるものでした。経済学の共同プログラム生として受講しているモジュールの一つがミクロ経済学で、800人以上が収容される講堂で行われます。国際バカロレア（IB）では経済学が得意科目の一つでした。そのため、LSEのような大学で学位レベルでこの科目を学ぶことは、挑戦的でありながらも刺激的な経験となっています。学校とは異なり、大学の学習は自主性が求められることが多く、授業時間は大幅に減少します。しかし、私の大学には素晴らしい学習施設が整っており、それが多少なりとも学習を楽しいものにしています。ロンドンで学生であることのもう一つの利点は、他大学の図書館も利用できることです。そのため、新たな学習スポットが尽きることは決してありません。
Being a university student, a fun social life is obviously integral to one’s lifestyle – societies, which are essentially groups of students coming together to pursue a common interest, is a great place to meet new people at university. LSE also has a Japan society, which even collaborates with other London university’s Japan societies, providing you with the opportunity to meet other Japanese students if you desire to do so.
大学生にとって、楽しい社交生活は明らかに生活様式に欠かせない要素だ。サークル活動は、学生が共通の興味を追求するために集まるグループであり、大学で新しい人々と出会う絶好の場である。LSEにも日本サークルがあり、他のロンドンの大学の日本サークルとも連携しているため、希望すれば他の日本人学生と知り合う機会も得られる。
Unlike most Japanese universities, universities’ undergraduate programmes in England are only three years long. This factor, combined with LSE’s strong emphasis on career prospects means that there is already a strong sense of post-graduation preparation in week 1 of first year. LSE ranks highly in graduate employability worldwide, with many alumni working for major financial services like Goldman Sachs, Consultancy firms or Government roles. With many internship schemes for 2026 opening now, conversations surrounding this is a hot topic on the LSE campus, which can be somewhat overwhelming. Although this intense environment was a factor I had been aware of when applying and deciding to come to LSE, experiencing it in real life has added a new layer of reality check.
英国の大学学部課程は、日本の大学とは異なり3年間のみである。この点に加え、LSEがキャリア見通しを強く重視しているため、1年次の第1週目から卒業後の準備が既に強く意識される。LSEは卒業生の就職率で世界的に高い評価を得ており、多くの卒業生がゴールドマン・サックスなどの大手金融サービス企業、コンサルティング会社、政府機関などで活躍している。2026年度向けインターンシップ募集が相次いで開始される中、LSEキャンパスではこの話題が熱く議論されており、やや圧倒される雰囲気もある。この緊張感ある環境は、LSEへの出願・進学決定時に認識していた要素ではあるが、実際に体験することで新たな現実を突きつけられることとなった。
Nevertheless, being surrounded by such hard-working individuals is a great privilege and an inspiration, making my university choice worth it for me. To those currently navigating the turbulent phase of working towards an uncertain future, I have found that trying my best and believing that everything will work out has worked out the best for me – best of luck!
