One such scholarship is found at Temple University’s Japan campus, found in Setagaya Ward’s Taishido. The Mochida-Stronach Scholarship, in summary, originates from Goldman-Sachs’ Japanese Branch’s former President, Mochida Masanori, along with former Dean of Temple University’s Japan campus, Bruce Stronach, and is used to fully fund an amount of students’ college tuition each year. Each award covers a student’s full academic journey (for up to 5 years), including an optional year-long study abroad program at Temple University’s home campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Students all throughout Japan’s public school system are encouraged to apply, with previous recipients hailing from Okinawa all the way to Hokkaido- not to say that those from more metropolitan-centric areas are at a disadvantage, as many successful applicants hail from major metropolitan regions like Tokyo.

As with every scholarship program, the Mochida-Stronach Scholarship has a few requirements. For starters, applicants for regular admission must fulfill a TOEFL iBT score of at least 79 (or an equivalent score on a similar test), while applicants for the bridge program (those that are not at a high enough English proficiency for the primary program) must score between 53-78 points on the TOEFL iBT, if not more. There is not a strict GPA minimum requirement, but prior recipients’ average GPAs came out to be approximately 3.34 unweighted, leaving little room for error throughout the high school years. A few writing pieces are also mandatory submissions; for example, a description of academic goals and how the scholarship will aid in the completion of them is to be submitted alongside a letter of recommendation and previously attained awards (if applicable). Such requirements are generally standard for scholarship applications to ensure that the prospective recipients’ goals align with the ideals and origins of the many existing scholarship funds.

For international students interested in studying abroad in Japan at one of the many prestigious universities, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology sets aside a noteworthy amount of money each year to aid in easing the financial strain studying abroad often causes. Known as the MEXT Scholarship, while it is not as all-encompassing as the Mochida-Stronach Scholarship, it allows students of all further education levels (especially those in the midst of their bachelor’s and master’s studies) to apply for financial assistance within their tenure at a Japanese university. That said, an exemption from tuition, along with provided airfare and a monthly stipend to use on living expenses, is more than enough for any student to thrive with.

Prior to the application, prospective applicants must complete assessments based on the desired attainment category. Each category (based on planned educational attainment within the timing of the scholarship) includes passing a Japanese language assessment, but other required subjects can include English, Mathematics, and the sciences. From there, students must receive an official recommendation from both their local Japanese embassy and their university, although not all Japanese universities are offered the opportunity to supply a MEXT recommendation, so students will need to make sure to inquire regarding eligibility prior to seeking a recommendation out. Such requirements may seem tedious to some, but with the benefits of an approved application, students can experience a life-changing change of scenery.
